PHP is an excellent web technology and is easy to use and learn. Staying true to your core says a lot about you "I will program your database, but just so you know my true abilities are in Javascript". I am a c++ expert but it's been 20 years, and I do not know it all (watching a Scott Meyers presentation proves that). Once you know "everything" in that language, then you have to realize that you are probably only half way there. Games come on many different platforms and languages. In fact, the language is not very important. C# probably less so, but it works great in Unity or for windowed tools and tools programmers are always needed for games. That said, you can work at a web company and make games on the side. Is C++ viable? Yes, that's mostly what I still do and it's a great paying programming language. and then possibly: Vita, Ouya, Android Watch, Wii, etc It is absolutely daunting the number of platforms that you can develop for. Today, if you want to release a game you should try to support: Web, PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android Tablet, X360, PS3, XBox1, PS4. This was partly because there were only ever 3-4 platforms and cross-platform delivery was kinda easy. Professional software engineer here with 24 shipped titles (AoE, Freelancer, Madden 07 Wii, and many more) on 18 different consoles/platforms (PC, Mac-old-style (g-worlds), Mac new style, Wii, PSX, Saturn, etc).Įverything is changing.
